Ed L. Walther, 68, died in July 30. Services were held on Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Houston. Burial followed at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. He was born in Warda on Sept. 17, 2934 to Edwin and Mathilda Hobratschk Walther. He was baptized and confirmed at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Houston for the past 45 years. After serving in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves, Walther joined the Houston Fire Department in 1961 where he rose through the ranks to the position of district chief. In addition to fire fighting, Ed enjoyed working in construction, along with his ranching activities. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Gail Fricke Walther, daughter, Paula McPartlin and husband David of Arlington; sons, Mark Walther, Michael Walther and wife Dawn of Houston; grandchildren Angelica, Brittany, and Connor McPartlin; Michael Jr. and Mathew Walther; sister Gloria Teinert of Austin; brothers Clinton and wife Marie of Livingston, Edmund and wife Helen of Houston. Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Eddie Ludwig Walther was born September 17, 1934 in Fayette County, Warda, Texas. Ed was the youngest of four children born to Edwin Carl Walther and Mathilda Hobratschk Walther. He was reborn through the water of Holy Baptism on September 30, 1934 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda, Texas with Reverend Paul C. Eifert officiating. Ed has 16 sponsors, including his cousin and fellow Immanuel member, Sidonia Walther Horn. He renewed his Baptismal faith through the rite of Confirmation at Holy Cross Lutheran in Warda, Texas. Ed grew up on the family farm near Warda, where he was in close touch with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ed received his primary education at Holy Cross Lutheran School. His primary language was German, and later learned English in the first grade.

Ed and Gail’s paths crossed briefly in 1954 in Giddings, Texas when they were both teenagers. In the fall of 1955 they became reacquainted at the Lee County Fair. By that time, Ed was already working construction and attending night classes at South Texas College, while Gail was attending the Houston Lilly Jolly School of Nursing. They dated for two years and enjoyed fishing in Galveston Bay and going dancing. When Gail began her third year of nursing, Ed received his draft notice for the U.S. Army, so the two of them decided to get married on June 15, 1957. On July 16, 1957 Ed left for basic training and Gail returned to nursing school. Both were quite miserable for the next six months until they were reunited.

Ed and Gail’s first home was an apartment located in the Heights area on Harvard street. They became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1958. Pending the arrival of their first child in 1960, the two bought a house in Timbergrove at 1114 Nashua. It was there that all three of their children, Paula, Mark and Michael were born. In March of 1969, Ed began building their present home at 3209 Brook Woods; Ed designed and built a major portion of the house by himself. He also had the help from some of his fellow fire fire-fighters. This was a project he was very proud of.

One of Ed’s biggest decisions relating to his career came in January 1961, when he joined the Houston Fire Department. A very dedicated fire-fighter, Ed dearly loved his job and the camaraderie of his fellow fire-fighters. He served in many areas of the city, as he rose through the ranks to become a District Fire Chief; a position he loved and was proud of.

In 1978, at the age of 44, Ed began losing sensation on one side of his face. He sought medical help for nearly two years, before a correct diagnosis was made – that dreaded word, brain tumor. After surgery and radiation treatments, he slowly recovered, but could never return to his fire-fighting job. At that time, he was given a maximum of five years to live. However, Ed was not only a fire-fighter by career, but a fighter for life! He spent the next 20 years keeping busy with the activities he enjoyed the most, such as spending time with his family, fishing at the beach and keeping up with his farm located in Moulton, Texas; where he loved tending to the cattle and planting large gardens each year. In November 2000, the brain tumor seemed to be growing and after consulting a top neuro-surgeon at M.D. Anderson he received stereo tactic radiation Necrosis. He then spent the last six months of his life unable to walk or speak clearly. Throughout the 25 years ordeal with the brain tumor, Ed never lost his faith in GOD; and was so thankful that he was able to spend these past 25 years with his beloved family. The physician at M.D. Anderson could not believe Ed had such a long survival for his type of tumor, which usually has a five year survival rate.

Ed passed away on July 30th, 2003 at the age of 68 years-old. His family is so grateful they were given the extra years to spend together. Ed is survived by his beloved wife Gail, daughter Paula and her husband Dr. David McPartlin of Arlington, Sons; Mark Edward Walther and Michael Thomas Walther and his wife Dawn of Houston; Five grandchildren; Angelica, Brittany, and Connor McPartlin of Arlington, Texas and Michael, Jr. and Matthew Walther of Houston.

Brothers; Edmund Walther and wife Helen of Houston, Clinton Walther and wife Marie of Livingston, Sister; Gloria Mae Teinert of Austin, Sister-in-laws; Billie Ann Langehennig and husband Kermit of Lexington and Susan Wingenter and husband Ronald of San Antonio, and a host of other relatives and loved ones.
Ed was a man of many talents and will be dearly missed
