HOUSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

Membership 300. Composed of 6 volunteer companies with 5 paid drivers on constant duty, one 2d class Silsby steamer, one Bolton hand engine, two hook and ladder trucks and four hose carts with 3000 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose, drawn by horses. Next election of officers takes place the 1st Monday in May, 1886. Regular meetings 1st Monday in February, May, August, and November of each year at City Hall.

The water facilities of the department are as follows: Two Worthington pumps with a capacity of 3,000,000 gallons per day, located at the pumping station of the Water Works on Buffalo bayou, northwest of Courthouse, force water to 88 stand pipe. In case of fire, water is pumped direct to mains at a pressure of from 90 - 125 lbs. per square inch.  There are in use 165 public hydrants, all double and 50 private hydrants.  A new stand pipe 30 inches in diameter and 150 feet high, is to be built by the water works about November 1st, 1885.
